The Department of Civil Engineering was established in 1978 and admitted the first set of students the same year into the first year. This set graduated in 1983. The Department is devoted to the preparation of students in the Department for professional practice in the design, construction, and maintenance of structures (buildings, bridges, towers etc.), sanitary systems (water supply, sewage disposal etc), transportation systems (streets, highways, airports etc) and earth structure and foundations. Civil Engineers carry out their work through service in and for the government and its agencies, in consulting firms, construction firms, and other similar outfits. The curriculum for the Bachelor of Civil Engineering was planned to provide the graduate with a solid foundation in the Natural and Physical Sciences, Mathematics, and Engineering fundamentals. In addition, the programme focuses on various applications of engineering fundamentals and the acquisition of skills needed to function effectively as a professional in society.
